Vaughn Taylor a Winner Again

By Peter Santo

Raise your hand if you had heard the name Vaughn Taylor within the last five years before Sunday, *Crickets*.

Vaughn Taylor is a 39 year old journeyman who is clearly past his prime. Before his victory at Pebble, his resume included two PGA Tour wins as well as a spot on the 2006 Ryder Cup squad.

Taylor entered the week ranked 447th in the Official World Golf Ranking, having not been fully exempt on the PGA Tour since 2012. He was just one week removed from missing the cut on the Tour.

It is certainly safe to say that Taylor won this one for all the underdogs out there, defeating World Golf Hall of Fame member Phil Mickelson for his first title since 2005. Taylor rocked a stand bag, something that is uncommon on Tour, and a bag of mixed brand clubs that did not include the latest and greatest models. If you didn’t know better, you might’ve thought he was one of the amateurs in the field.

With the victory Taylor earns a spot in The Masters and a two year PGA Tour exemption. Safe to say this was a career changing win for Taylor.

Taylor will not have much time to celebrate his victory, as he will tee it up in the Northern Trust Open at Riviera beginning tomorrow.
