Venus Williams snubbing the media after loss was bush league

This is absurd. She should be suspended. Speaking to the media is part of their job. They don’t have to give good answers (see Lynch, Marshawn) but they have to show up.

After a disappointing 7-6 (5), 6-1 loss to fellow American Sloane Stephens, Venus Williams left Roland Garros without sitting for her mandatory press conference, a decision that will earn her a fine, but hardly of the amout that will put a dent in the wallet of a woman who’s won $30.5 million on the court, not to mention her prodigious endorsement portfolio.

Instead of sitting for the press conference, Williams issued a two-paragraph statement through the tournament that was about as perfunctory and meaningless as, well, anything she would have said in that press conference.

That’s why I’m not going to sit here and say skipping a presser is the most egregious think a tennis player can do, but it’s still bush league and a disappointment, especially coming from one of the game’s great ambassadors and elder stateswomen…
